Peace Lily

Peace lilies are tropical evergreens that grow on the forest floor.  Indoor plants can grow to be up to 16 inches tall.  The Peace Lily originates from the tropical regions of the Americas and Southeastern Asia and belongs to a species of flowering plants in the family Araneae.

Characterized by her long, elegant, dark-green leaves which are blessed with delicate white flowers, the Peace Lily makes the perfect addition to any home. This plant is often given to families at a loved one’s funeral service.

Peace lily plants are not true lilies but are so named because their blooms resemble the flowers of the calla lily. The part of the peace lily that most people assume is a flower is actually a specialized leaf that grows like a hood over the actual flower. Their Latin name means “spathe-leaf” in English, referring to this white sheath-like leaf.

The peace lily’s name is most likely a reference to the white blooms that resemble white flags of peace. They are also sometimes known as “closet plants.”.  These stately shade-loving plants are not only easy to care for but are excellent at cleaning the air of a home or office. Their deep green leaves and large white blooms add a touch of flair to any indoor space

The Peace Lily’s stunning white flowers and long elegant leaves make this a very calming and beautiful addition to any home. Due to their tolerance of low to bright, indirect sunlight, Peace Lilies will bring life to a dark spot and their air-purifying powers make them a perfect botanical bedroom companion.

Not only is this flowering plant a stunner, but she’s good in low-light conditions and cleans the air from pollutants such as Formaldehyde and Benzene.  Her calming effect will also help you to relax and aid good sleep making her a good choice for the bedroom!  Remember that prolonged exposure to bright direct sunlight may burn and scorch her leaves and dry out her flowers. Aim for weekly waterings, but she will tell you when she is thirsty by dropping her leaves

Your peace lily will do best in bright indirect light and can adapt to lower light. Too much bright light will burn the foliage. Too little light and the plant will not produce flowers and foliage growth will slow

Weekly waterings should be optimum for Peace Lilies, but it will tell you when it needs water by drooping its leaves.  Water when 50% of the soil volume is dry. If the plant gets too dry it will dramatically wilt, but a good watering should perk it back up. Water thoroughly until you see it flow out of the drainage and discard excess water in the saucer.  Your peace lily prefers a humid environment. Place a humidifier nearby or use a pebble tray.

Your peace lily prefers average room temperatures from 60-80°F. They are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, so keep away from drafty areas and open vents.

Use a general houseplant fertilizer every month during the spring and summer. No fertilizer is necessary if the plant is not putting out new growth.

Peace Lily is considered to be toxic to animals and humans if ingested

Brown or yellow leaves: suggest your Peace Lily has been exposed to too much light. Drooping leaves: indicate your Peace Lily has been underwatered
